Is
chocolate’s bad reputation reasonable? Should we embrace it as a wonder food or
just avoid it as a damaging delight? Here’s the fix on chocolate’s most
infamous myths.
1. Chocolate elevates bad cholesterol –
Studies have shown that chocolate does not increase bad cholesterol at all, and
in fact it can actually decrease cholesterol level for some people. Chocolate
contains cocoa butter, Vosges chocolate which
is said to be high in saturated fat; much of its fat comes from stearic acid,
which in reality doesn’t act like saturated fat.
2. Sugar content can lead to
hyperactivity –Quality studies have failed to find any kind of the links
between sugar in children’s chocolate intake and hyperactive behavior. It is
just the environment that generates the excitement like birthday parties,
holidays etc.
3. A complete NO for people with
Diabetes – Yes, diabetic people can eat chocolates. Recent studies suggest that
bitter sweet chocolate can improve insulin sensitivity in people with normal to
high blood pressure. But, do check with your doctor before indulging in those premium white chocolate chips.
4. Causes cavities – Chocolate has less
of an impact on dental plaque than pure table sugar. A study from Osaka
University found that part of the cocoa beans which is the main constituent of
chocolate, prevents mouth bacteria and tooth decay.
5. Causes weight gain – Obliviously,
massive intake of Vosges chocolate will
not do any favors to your waistline but, studies indicate that consuming a
small amount of chocolate each day is linked to a lower body mass index.
6. Causes acne – Studies have failed to
show any link between chocolate consumption and acne. Diet plays close to no
role in acne treatment in most patients. Even great quantities of chocolate
have not clinically aggravated acne.
So, go for
your sweet treat without any guilt but in limits.
