The popularity of chocolates in Belgium goes back to early seventeenth century, when Belgium was under Spanish rule. Chocolate, specifically hot chocolates gained quite popularity, even with Belgian aristocracy. It became one of the favourite drinks of the middle and upper middle class.
So let’s do some detailed study about this amazing man made product which has become the favourites of the adults and children alike.
Chocolate was not consumed in the form as it is today. It was used basically in the form of drinks like wine or corn juice.
Earlier civilisations like Aztec civilisation revered it so much that they used cacao seeds in the form of currency. Earlier people believed that chocolates contained an aphrodisiac quality that is they were energy boosters. Scientists have been trying to reveal this secret. Chocolates contain flavonoids and anandamides which are same as the chemicals secreted by the brain. This anandamide is a feel good chemical. It helps in reducing tension and uneasiness within the body. The brain stops processing this chemical after some time. Consumption of chocolate keeps this chemical production within the brain persistent. It is believed that though chocolates do not contain the same chemical as marijuana, their effect on the brain is similar to that of marijuana.
Today most of raw chocolate is produced in western parts of Africa. So one can see that how important chocolate have become in the history of mankind. Amongst Belgian chocolates, Dolfin chocolate and Godiva chocolate both have gained popularity.
